Best time to visit Kashmir — a month-by-month guide

Travel Crew 6 min read

Tulips in April, meadows in June, snow from December. Here is what the valley actually looks like in each month, and what it costs.

Kashmir is one of the few Indian destinations that genuinely works all twelve months — but the trip you get in April is nothing like the one you get in January. Here is how we advise travellers, season by season.

March to April — tulips and blossom

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden opens for roughly three weeks, usually late March to mid-April. It is the single most photographed window of the year and hotel rates in Srinagar rise sharply. Book at least eight weeks ahead if the tulips are your reason for coming.

May to June — peak season

The classic postcard Kashmir. Gulmarg's meadow is green, Pahalgam is at its best and Sonmarg opens fully. It is also the busiest and priciest stretch, and Gulmarg gondola queues can run to two hours if you arrive after 10 AM.

July to September — quiet and green

Fewer travellers, better rates and the valley at its greenest. Occasional rain, and the Amarnath yatra period brings traffic restrictions on the Pahalgam and Sonmarg roads. Our favourite value window.

October to November — autumn colour

The chinar trees turn and Srinagar looks extraordinary. Crisp days, cold nights, low crowds. If you want photographs and quiet, this is the month to pick.

December to February — snow

Gulmarg becomes a ski destination and everything is under snow. Roads to Sonmarg usually close, and Pahalgam access can be intermittent. Build a buffer day into any winter Kashmir plan.
