Six days in Meghalaya — the offbeat route

Travel Crew 7 min read

Skip the standard Shillong loop. This is the version we send travellers who want fewer people in their photographs.

Most Meghalaya packages base you in Shillong and drive out and back each day. It wastes four hours daily and misses the best light. Here is the loop version.

Day 1 — Guwahati to Shillong

Land, drive up with an Umiam Lake stop, and keep the evening free. Do not schedule anything on arrival day.

Day 2 — Shillong to Cherrapunji

Move base rather than returning. Nohkalikai in the afternoon has better light than the morning, and the crowds thin after 3 PM.

Day 3 — Nongriat

Start the root bridge trek by 7 AM. It is 3,500 steps down and back, and doing the climb in afternoon heat is what breaks people.

Day 4 — Dawki and Mawlynnong

Reach Dawki before 10 AM for clear water and empty boats. Stay the night near Mawlynnong instead of driving back — the village at dusk is the whole point.

Day 5 — Laitlum and back to Shillong

Laitlum Canyon in the morning, the Mawphlang sacred forest on the way, and an easy evening in Shillong's café district.
